Whether you’re a passionate home cook or a professional, no kitchen is complete without a pestle and mortar. Whether you are preparing a quick curry spice base or fresh pesto, this is a kitchen essential. This is the perfect tool for creating pastes, dressings, pesto or grinding whole spices to create fabulously fresh spice rubs. Dry or wet dressings come together simply and quickly, whether you are mashing delicate herbs or pounding hard spices.
Its large 16cm diameter gives you plenty of surface area inside the bowl and the shape makes it as ergonomic as possible for smashing, squashing and crushing. This is far superior to the novelty glass ones or some of the wooden ones we’ve seen – the weight makes it easy to use without being overly cumbersome.
Engineered from high-quality granite, this pestle & mortar will not absorb liquids so any oils you extract will stay in the mix and not leech into the bowl.
For a quick pesto, try this simple recipe:
- Peel & bash 1 garlic in a pestle and mortar with a pinch of sea salt.
- Pick a good handful of basil leaves, add with 50g of dry-toasted pine nuts (or walnuts), and pound everything to a coarse paste.
- Drizzle in 2-3 tbsp cold-pressed rapeseed or olive oil and muddle together
- Add 50g grated Parmesan, adding a splash of water if you like it a little runnier, then continue bashing and pounding until smooth.
That’s it! Season with black pepper & a pinch more salt if needed. Stir through cooked pasta or boiled new potatoes, or drizzle over some fish or meat as you finish cooking. It’s incredibly versatile – we even add a drizzle to a tomato salad for an extra boost.
