Our amazing Gunpowder spice is incredibly aromatic & versatile. Using a good pinch is the quickest way to add a huge punch of flavour to food. One of the interesting ingredients in this one is organic black rice, finely ground to give texture to the finished spice rub.
Use 1 tsp when sautéing onions to start off a curry or add a pinch to the finished dish as you serve – this is a really quick tip to freshen up the flavours in any dish & is commonly done with Garam Masala; using a pinch of our Gunpowder spice instead will give that extra kick! We often add a pinch of spice to a curry with some chopped coriander as you serve – you must try it!
Rub onto chicken before roasting or sprinkle over roast veggies (especially roast potatoes!) or lentil dishes. Dust onto halloumi, tofu or paneer before you cook it for even more flavour. You can either add 1 Tbsp to some flour & dust the food, or skip the flour completely & just dust the spice! This is an amazing blend that gives anything a real boost.
This is our fave way of cooking tofu:
- 1 block of extra firm tofu, cubed & dried with kitchen towel
- 1 Tbsp Gunpowder spice rubbed onto it
- saute for 5 mins, turning to brown on all sides
- finish baking in the oven for 12-15 mins to get crispy
- add to salads & curries

Try stirring 1 tsp of Gunpowder spice into sour cream or Greek yoghurt for an interesting dip – you’ll get the warmth of the spice with the cooling sour cream & a touch of bite with the ground black rice!
